It’s a new week, here’s some new features:
I think I saw about 5 hardcore arcade/puzzle games today. They seemed pretty decent too. FYI: Due to technical issues this week, I won’t be uploading screenshots of store pages for features. That should return next week.
This post is part of a series where I feature the most interesting new releases on Valve’s Steam store. With my first impressions commentary to go along with each. Learn more about this series at this blog post.
Mixed Feelings Features:
There’re a lot of RPGMaker titles uploaded to Steam every single week. It’s going to take a lot to grab my attention and a unique art style certainly doesn’t hurt your chances. The Amber Throne gives me the feeling that hard work was put into it. That this isn’t simply a lazy shot into the Steam ecosystem. So I have hopes that it’s pretty good though I’ll probably never find out as I’m not really invested into the jRPG genre anymore. But, I figured I’d bring your attention to it.
Speaking of overcrowded genres, 2D hardcore platformers aren’t unique on Steam. But this minimalist platformer might be worth a look. It’s got a unique graphic style going on, it’s $4.99 and has an excellent soundtrack by 4mat. I’ve followed 4mat for some time now and his work is quite good. Apparently I’m in a mood to feature intriguing minimalist titles.
Which makes the theme of the day seems pretty obvious. Interesting little minimal puzzle game right here, called Hook. I’m really not sure what to think of Hook. But it’s being sold as a 99 cent, short puzzle game. And hey, they aren’t trying to oversell it. Gotta give them credit for that.
Do you hate yourself? Do you want to feel slightly sea-sick? Well, oO might just do that for you. So, warning, that trailer might make you feel motion sickness. I’m not a fan of these type of hardcore arcade games. Mostly because I suck at them. But I can respect the developers and players who make/play them. oO might just be another one to add to your list if you like this genre.
A soccer driving game. You know, I’d say that’s the weirdest thing I’ve seen on Steam but it really isn’t. Which concerns me. Anywho, Rocket League looks like a fun time. Not really convinced by the price of $20 and the lack of 4-pack pricing is real. This comes from the same developers who currently have a team-based PVP game in early access called Nosgoth. You’ve probably heard about that one because it has gotten a lot of advertising. Even more interesting is that 3,400 players are currently playing Rocket League. It’s got mostly positive reviews as well.
You might get the impression from the trailer that this is an early access game being sold on Steam. You might also get the impression that this game is based off of the movie Taken. It isn’t either of these things. In before the copyright lawyers come down on these guys with a bag of bricks. It claims that this is an Unreal 4 powered game. I don’t believe them. I also can’t believe that the “horrifying girl” is…well, that. It’s not scary, it’s actually really funny to see her pop up on screen. That’s not the reaction developers should want. Not surprisingly, Taken is getting mostly negative reviews.
Uhh, your trailer just cuts off SmiteWorks USA. You might want to fix that. Oh and possibly your game, as its got a mostly negative rating right now.
This game claims it’s a 2D stealth game but then shows absolutely no stealth elements in the trailer or screenshots. The assets, the poorly designed art style, the lackluster trailer…yeah. None of these things are a sign of a good game. Which probably explains the price tag of 24 cents…
