For those that have followed me over the years, you know that protecting the Internet has been one of my greater passions. In particular, the SOPA and PIPA bills got me really fired up in 2012. That passion hasn’t died over the years. If anything, it has only gotten stronger. I’ve been following the stories about the NSA and the Snowden leaks as they have come out over the past six or so months. While I haven’t talked about it too much, I have shared some of the most startling revelations about it. It was one of the greatest abuses of our government and it should not be allowed to continued. The fact that President Obama wants to continue the abuses of the NSA is extremely telling. But it’s time that we the people fought back and made our voice heard. That it isn’t right for the government to continue mass surveillance on unsuspected people of the United States just so that we might catch a terrorist. A program that has widespread potentials for abuse but has to this date: STOPPED ZERO TERRORIST THREATS. A program that scans our emails, our text messages, our instant messages, all of our communication and website traffic is completely unacceptable! This program has absolutely no reason to continue! What prevents another Richard Nixon or other nefarious person to use such a program to gain absolute control in our government?! And it continuing just to make sure we get the boogie man is not acceptable! It never should be! So let’s stop this nonsense before it’s allowed to continue any further.
I did call my representatives and, to my amusement, all I got were messages saying that they were dealing with a lot of calls. I did leave a message with each one calling for them to protect our privacy. I have hope that it’ll do something. At the very least, I made my voice heard. After all, that’s what the representatives are there for. That and I got added to a list in the NSA database ;P. Kidding.
I am ecstatic to see the EFF, Mozilla, Tumblr, Automattic, tucows, reddit, the Free Software Foundation and so many other organizations join this fight. I’m here to say that A Paladin Without A Crusade is joining the fight to show support for the initiative. This is the new SOPA/PIPA and that doesn’t make it any better. I believe it is a right, not a privilege, that we get privacy regardless of it being a physical or digital world. Fear mongering of the “Terrorist threat” will not sway me from this opinion.
It’s time to fight back. It’s time to tell the United States’ government that spying on it’s own citizens with the NSA is illegal and against our constitution. We have a right to our privacy. A RIGHT. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. Don’t buy into the statement that “Well I have nothing to hide” because that is extremely self-centered and such a ridiculous statement that I don’t even know where to start.
Mozilla, the EFF, ACLU, Reddit and many other websites are joining the fight but they need your calls and emails to our legislators. I did and so can you. It is the very least that you can do to make your voice heard.
My website is joining with the Day We Fight Back fight and already has a banner up. I ask that you join us in the fight to stop the abuses of the NSA and other US government agencies. We deserve our right to privacy. Fight back and share this post with your friends, family and everyone you know. Let our voice be clear to those on top that this is not ok. This is a battle that will determine the course of our future. Of whether we roll over and simply accept a state of surveillance that’s been built up. OR, that we demand that our government respect the Constitution that we follow and tear down this surveillance state.
I want to tell future generations that we did what we could to ensure freedom and privacy in a new age of technology. That these fights against the abuses of the NSA, the abuses of Copyright Law and other overreaching organizations were stopped to ensure that future generations could enjoy what we now enjoy. A world of choice and power to the individual.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please go to www.thedaywefight.org and share this blog post and that website with everyone you know. Further, I hope you will also email and call your representatives to put a stop to this. It’s not asking too much and the website does all of the hard work for you. So please, do it today.
