A Paladin’s Week: Lots of Linux and Lots of Christmas…

I put up lights today and here's some of them.

I put up lights on the house today and here’s some of them.

I can’t believe this week is already over and another one is starting up. I know I haven’t posted anything for almost a week but I really wanted to get my Linux project done by yesterday. Since I’m not working a lot right now, I decided to push my main desktop onto Linux by the end of the week. This has been a fairly long project to pick a Linux distribution to put on my main machine for long-term use. The first part was playing and trying out a variety of different desktops and distributions to get used to the idea of Linux and the whole mind-set behind it. I also did plenty of research and listening to Linux veterans to hear what they had to say about the platform in general. Second part was to find out was not only lacking but what Linux had over Windows. It wouldn’t do me any good to switch over and find myself completely unable to do what I like to do on my computer. The third and final part was figuring out which distro I was going to use. This all took a long time because it had been a secondary priority to everything else going on in my life. Until recently, I didn’t have a ton of time or energy to devote to it so when I did, I took the chance and finished up part three over the past couple of weeks.

I finally chose Solydk. It’s a Debian-based distribution with a KDE desktop environment. I went with this one because I liked another distro called Mint but didn’t like some of it’s shortcomings. (Mostly those were upgrade issues and inability to customize how I wanted to). I also had to choose it because of its odd name ;). Solydk is a split off of Mint and I really liked how it was setup so I went with it. The only issues I’ve had with the OS so far are self-inflicted. I’m a noob so I made a few easily-correctable mistakes. Otherwise, Solydk has been handling like a champ and I’m really happy with it so far. I’m writing this blog post on Solydk right now. I’ll be talking more about my experiences on TeknoCratik later on I imagine. But, I’m glad everything has been going well. I’m really glad to be on Linux after all this time and I’m hoping that this is the start of something new.

Job front has been slow, unfortunately. My business is in a holding pattern despite my expansion to Portland which is incredibly disappointing, even if I did expect that to be a possibility of happening. I’ll be doing some more work on that front this week but nothing I can talk about at the moment. The contract firm is currently waiting for the company to figure out the stuff on their end so I’m not able to work until that happens. Furthermore, my applications/resumes haven’t gotten any interest when passed out. I’m still waiting to hear back from two potential jobs but feeling uncertain about them at the moment. Not going to lie, it’s a little frustrating to go a week without any paying jobs. I love working on my own projects but not getting paid for anything I do in the week just adds to the stress I have about paying loans next month. Yeah, I’ve gotten a notification to expect a bill to come very soon. My first payment will be due by January 15th. Thanks a lot 2014 for starting out so swell. Blegh. Sold my car this week so I’m pretty happy about that. It was a really great car too…

Despite the really cold weather, it barely snowed at all over here. We’ve been getting the decorations out for Christmas today. I’d show you the Christmas tree that’s for me but it’s incomplete until I can find hooks for all the new ornaments I’ve collected/gifted to me over the past couple of years. It’s been a long time since I’ve had my own personal Christmas tree due to lack of space in my room. But now I do! And it looks really good. Soon as I’m done writing this post, I’m going to scrounge through some boxes to find some. I also set up some lights on the exterior of the house so give the pictures down below a look if you want to see them. That took a long time due to some faulty strings of light. Ugh, we’re hoping to upgrade all of our broken ones to strings that keep on working even if one light dies next year. Christmas is in full force now as we get ready to host it at our house at the end of the month. I’m sure we’ll be ready….yeah….totally. đŸ˜›

By the way, I’ll be doing another stream of System Shock tomorrow (Monday) around 8pm PST. So keep an eye out for that! I hope everyone had a great weekend and I’ll speak to you soon.
