King’s Personal Musing 2/11/13: Metacritic Stupidity, Amazon’s Currency Obliqueness and much more…

Digging through the archives of my photo library yet again, say hello to Molly… I muse about Metacritic’s stupidity, Amazon’s Currency Obliqueness and more…

My Life Musings…

Hello, yeah, once again, five day wait. Reminds me to never set dates yet and yet again because I never seem to be able to hold to them right now. Its not like I didn’t want to publish between the last two personal musings, its that life has not been much fun lately. I had my last midterm for Winter term today and I’m not too enthusiastic about that one. Life in general hasn’t been a whole barrel of laughs though its probably my fault. I think things are catching up to me and I’m getting unhappy over it. At least, that’s how I can describe this last weekend. I’m not sure. I’m rambling at this point aren’t I? Today wasn’t so bad after the midterm was over so that’s something. Got my geography homework so that I could concentrate on reading for the rest of the week. And so, I find myself working on this personal musing tonight. Except that I don’t really have much to talk about tonight. Oh, did I forget to mention? Got ill over the weekend. It was a sore throat that threatened to be a cold but never did. I seem to be getting over it today which is great. I don’t need to be knocked out for a week due to a nasty illness. I tend to be pretty immune to most illnesses that spread around the house/college area but once in a while, I’ll get hit with something nasty and I am out for a week. Thankfully, it hasn’t happened this term, yet. My voice was taken out of commission though so I couldn’t do any recording like I had hoped. Not that it really mattered since I was busy studying anyway. Voice still sounds rough tonight too but my throat is just fine. Which is a bit weird. *shrug*, I’ll be better tomorrow.

Oiu, that is one big ramble fest there. x_x. Erm, maybe next time I’ll have more coherent thoughts eh? ;).

Tech and Gaming News To Talk About…

MetacriticHere we go again. Metacritic is back in the news after naming EA the “major publisher of the year”. Nearly died laughing after hearing that news title but that makes it no less true. Yeah, EA, “major publisher of the year”. They came to this by adding a bunch of average scores together, multiplying them and then adding bonus points for being a good game. I’m not even really sure how anyone could take this seriously to be quite honest. Its a bunch of random numbers added together in some arbitrary fashion. Why oh why do people continue to rely on these scores? I can understand individual reviewer score systems but this is just a bunch of arbitrariness presented as though its facts. Its not. And Metacritic shouldn’t put this out like that either but they do! EA was not the major publisher of the year, that’s a joke and a half. Just looking at the list is really questionable how they came to that. Quit relying on Metacritic. The fact that companies do (and have fired people over it) is sickening.

Gas Powered Games calls it quits on Wildman and the Kickstarter. With only a few more days to go, Chris Taylor and the crew call it quits. Their plans are to try and keep the company afloat at this point. However, call me skeptical but I have my doubts that GPG will be around for much longer. If THQ couldn’t survive its financial troubles, I have some really big doubts that the struggling GPG can fair much better. Maybe they’ll surprise me. But most likely they won’t. Bah, that’s me being cynical isn’t it. I really don’t care either way. The more exciting game is the Planetary Annihilation game that is coming out…well…”soon”. That’s where a lot of the good developers from GPG went and I think that game is going to be far more interesting than Wildman could ever have been.

Speaking of arbitrary nonsense…Amazon is launching its own appstore currency for sure with the Kindle fire. Because why not. This is something else I truly dislike. Maybe even hate. Between Microsoft points and Facebook bucks, I had thought we were past these “currency systems”. Seems I was wrong. Coming this May, this virtual currency will be use for the Amazon Appstore only. I really dislike currency systems like these because they obfuscate how much your actually paying for something or make it easier to spend your hard earned money. Instead of an app costing $9.99 it now costs ‘300 coins’ or something. When your dealing with thousands of coins, that doesn’t sound so bad, does it. Its why I’m really glad I’m not on Xbox Live. I actually had to deal with a point system once. I think it was through EA’s services and I hated it then as much as I did now. Its completely unnecessary when money works just as well and it just makes you look really shady when you use a system like it. Its probably why Facebook’s ‘Bucks’ system died so quickly if I had to guess.

Photos To See…

This is a holly tree I photoed on one of my runs through Eugene. I always liked the look of these trees, not sure why.

Quit sending me farmville requests. You have been warned.

Snow, its everywhere but where I live. I swear that’s just how it is. I shouldn’t complain though…

I haven’t seen the beach for a long time…

Audio of Note…

This was shared on my SoundCloud feed, a chiptune beat and it has a great beat and music to it. Was great listening to it.

Zircon rarely disappoints and this bunch of tracks is well worth listening to. Lots of ambiance and just awesome music here.

Cool Videos To Watch…

If there is one thing I never tire of, its learning cool history tidbits and fun facts about things in the past. This desire to learn of such intriguing factoids increases exponentially when its about gaming. Gaming has some of the most interesting facts and my ears always perk up. So basically, these people are tugging my brain-strings just right so i’ve been looking more and more forward to these Did You Know Gaming segments. And this one is about the Legend of Zelda series. Enjoy:

It seems that the outrage about Dead Space 3 may be..mostly misplaced. After watching this WTF is of DS3…I am left very puzzled. One of the guys stated that the Dead Space 3 port to PC won’t be any different than the console. But all the settings for a PC optimized game was there. And the game seems generally solid for a 3rd release. Of course, the microtransactions are there which makes this an avoid for me but still…this game confuses me…  EA continues to confuse me and its kind of odd.

I generally avoid linking vids like this but minutephysics has put together a very good list of sciency-internet-resources that you really should check out. I was subscribed to about 1/5th of them but added the rest to my various queues to look at later. So if your looking to be smarter every day, then look no further.

Its a poem about FTL and its brilliant. Watch the video, it really sums up the game well. I can’t say anything more about it.

I hope you enjoyed this post and until next time…whenever that might be, thanks for reading!
