King’s Personal Musing 12/17/12: GameSpy Multiplayer Server Problems, Calm Day and more…

Calm Christmas Days…I muse about GameSpy’s server troubles, the calm day its been and more…

Latest Happenings and Musings:

Today has been a fairly quiet and busy day so I don’t have much to talk about. Just been busy working at my job and projects. Motherboard has not yet arrived and its looking 50/50 that it will show up tomorrow. Here’s hoping. So yeah, pretty quick musings for the day. News has also been slow but I’ve got something to talk about.

Oh, as I noted on Twitter you can expect the following posts this week: 4 personal musings, 4 Top 10 lists and 1 Thoughts post on the year of 2012 in reflection. One Top 10 post has already been published for your reading enjoyment. Expect the rest in the coming days, I’m going to end 2012 with a bang :).

Tech and Gaming News To Read:

GameSpy has been shutting down multiplayer to quite a few older games without any warning. Said games included SWAT 4, Star Wars: Battlefront, Neverwinter Nights and many more. The initial blame went to GameSpy for suddenly increasing their rates to an extreme rate that the developers weren’t willing to pay that for older games that weren’t making much money anymore. Other blame was that this happened without any warning. However, GameSpy shot back, blaming publishers for not willing to support their communities. “…A number of our publisher partners elected to allow their contracts for GameSpy’s services to lapse by not continuing to pay for these services. In some cases this lapsing ranges back as much as four years…we cannot be expected to provide a service free of charge to publishers who choose not to renew their service agreements…” You can read the full quote over at the link. I’ve never particularly trusted GameSpy’s service when I considered buying games and this only further cements my distrust of the service. Now granted, GameSpy is not entirely to blame here. If publishers were indeed failing to pay up for the service GameSpy was providing them, then GameSpy had every right to take down the service. Still, I would strongly advise against buying a game for the multiplayer aspect if its based on the GameSpy service. Its tragic to see these game’s multiplayer communities suddenly cut off from playing their games and if those games had been built with the ability to setup servers outside of GameSpy, then they wouldn’t be in this mess. Its unfortunate to see…
