Personal Musing: 6/6/12…

Wednesdays, oh wednesdays…thou wednesdays……..

Ergh……..grgl…..glugh….ergh…..oh….hi there…yeah, one moment……ergh…..yeah…brain is kinda melted….yours would be too if you studied for espanol finals for so many days and hours…..grgl…..yeah….I’ll pick….it up soon…..just takes a while….hold…on….I’ll get….some water……………………………………………………………………there we go. Finals weeks are painful. So as I said, spanish spanish spanish, cramming as many words into my brain and the worst part is, it isn’t quite over yet. I still have an oral exam Friday. Ugh. But oh well. Today, after I got done with that test I pretty much stopped studying for the day and worked on other stuff that isn’t quite so important. Mostly course evaluations and picking up stuff and etc. Not the most interesting stuff to talk about for sure. There isn’t much to say than that really. Didn’t game much, though did watch quite a bit of Netflix. Netflix always gets watched more around finals. Tis weird. Tis life, I suppose and I move on with each passing day, doing the darn best I can. Darnit.

Right into: the news:

Twitter announced its new Twitterbird logo. The Logo is now the only image to be used to associate with Twitter and I like it. Its got a nice sense of balance to it. And its long overdue that Twitter settled on a logo, as its been rather…interesting…the logo choices throughout the past several years I’ve been on the network myself. Just a cool little announcement.

LinkedIn got hacked today, and had many of its customer’s passwords stolen. LinkedIn publicly admitted that it got hacked and recommended everyone change their passwords. Which you should routinely change your passwords anyway, and I already did. Its a bit unfortunate, but hacking seems to be the general state of affairs as far as accounts are concerned. Just yesterday had a friend’s email account hacked and they spammed me with an obvious scam. =.

Do you like SimCity? Do you like playing it offline? Then forgot it, SimCity will be an always-online, multiplayer videogame. *sigh*….I’ve ranted on and on about DRM and it seems I have to do so yet again. One of the developers for SimCity made a statement that “EA is an Online Company…we’re putting in backstops and checks to prevent (DRM crashing your game)”.  That is rich, coming from EA. This is EA we are talking about.  EA, who’s Battlefield servers crash on release for weeks, EA, who shuts down those same servers once they’re no longer making a profit. What a…gahh, that was such a laughable statement by them it hurts. EA has basically decided that, if Blizzard can use that DRM, so can we.  Yeah, except here is the thing EA. YOUR NOT BLIZZARD. Blizzard only gets away with stuff like this because of their reputation and following, which Blizzard’s reputation is not undeserved, though it may require some rethinking with the past events of late…I’m just going to say it now. Do NOT buy the next SimCity game. You’ll only run into the same problems, if not worse, as Diablo 3 did. And you’ll be lucky if the servers stay up for more than two years. Its happened before, and it shall happen again. This DRM is completely unnecessary and its saddening to say, I won’t touch it with a 100ft pole.

EA continues to say more dumb things. I realize I’ve been on an anti-EA rampage as of late, and the latest announcements from SimCity do nothing to settle the fires of dislike towards this company. But I’ll only stop calling EA on their BS when they quit saying BS. So basically, EA’s Origin’s Boss states the following: (Quoted from RPS’s article, which is quoted from an interview)

“We [Origin] won’t be doing that [deep-discounting in sales]. Obviously they think it’s the right thing to do after a certain amount of time. I just think it cheapens your intellectual property. I know both sides of it, I understand it. If you want to sell a whole bunch of units, that is certainly a way to do that, to sell a whole bunch of stuff at a low price. The gamemakers work incredibly hard to make this intellectual property, and we’re not trying to be Target. We’re trying to be Nordstrom. When I say that, I mean good value – we’re trying to give you a fair price point, and occasionally there will be things that are on sale you could look for a discount, just don’t look for 75 percent off going-out-of-business sales.”

No. Sales do not cheapen your intellectual property. Give me an example of where this happens. (I’m sure someone will though haha). And to be quite frank, your not Nordstrom, you are indeed Target because many of your games absolutely SUCK. And then you have some good ones. But do I need to bring up your past games that have just been awful? If you want to be Nordstrom, then you need to quit shipping crappy games out. You need to put quality into your games like you did with Mass Effect 3. If every game of yours was Mass Effect 3 in quality, then many of us would feel compelled to buy your games at top dollar. As it is, quite frankly, the only dev company I feel like buying any game at $60 is from Valve and that’s because generally their games are quite good. Yours? Maybe 1 in 5 are good, if that. I’m probably being generous. Let’s also not forget that everyone is on a limited budget and if, for example, I only have $30 and all your games are priced at $40, guess who’s games I won’t be buying… While I agree that if everyone bought games at 75% off that isn’t a good thing for the industry, but I don’t think that where we are is really hurting and it seems that in many cases, having deep sales works out in the long run for developers. Plus, we really don’t feel that we’re getting our money’s worth out of games when we have to pay $60 for a game that is bug ridden, game issues and DRM attached. Get my point? If you want to be Nordstrom, actually deliver. Its not difficult…

Instapaper, the popular read-later app for iOS has now arrived on Android. You should give it a check, its quite good. I use it all the time myself, currently have a pretty long reading list due to finals and stuff heh.

Instapaper Feature:

From moyer777 comes this picture of Marigolds in bloom. Nice shot! 🙂

Video Feature:

Would have to be two again today. First off, I like Mrs. Doubtfire the movie, but this re-cut certainly puts a much dark spin on it. Hehe. Oh the jokes that are made in this movie are more hilarious as an adult too xD, I saw quite a bit of it recently…and its, a lot of <insert George Takei here:> “ohhhhh-my” material xDD.

Second off, this talented and good looking girl performs a great version of the Skyrim theme. I really enjoyed listening and wished it had been longer. Enjoy!

*listens again…* Ohh her voice is just great *melts*, its really good.

Until next time dear readers…
