Musing: About S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Being Frozen…

So when I got online yesterday, I was greeted with the unfortunate news that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s development was frozen for good. To bring you up to speed, several months earlier, GSC World, the company that originally developed the STALKER franchise, was suddenly closed down while working on STALKER 2. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/12/09/wuh-oh-gsc-stalker-2-dead/ While the team said they would continue working on it, it seems that is no longer the case. Now the dev team has started a new company called Vostok Games and is now working on a new MMOFPS F2P game called Survarium.  Article, among many about the subject.

Its hard to say what really went down that caused the sudden closing of the company. Maybe the founder had had enough. Maybe the dev team and CEO were clashing and the atmosphere got hostile. I mean, the dev team has stuck together so far so it can’t be inner conflicts with the team. While the CEO states that it was a failed publishing deal on the consoles and the costs of developing, I find that a bit hard to believe. Its not impossible no, but surely S.T.A.L.K.E.R. COP would have told the CEO just how much it cost to make a sequel and if it cost too much, why make it then? And then it also raises the question, why couldn’t the dev team get the license? Too much money asked on either side? I don’t know. Its a curious question and clearly something happened behind closed doors that caused this. My guess is that it has to do with the CEO. Maybe he got jaded. Maybe he decided he had enough. Or maybe he didn’t want the franchise to end on a low note and he was seeing it in 2. The more I think about this story, the more I think its got something to do with the CEO. There even was a rumor that he sold the rights to Besthesda, but the official GSC twitter account shot down that rumor down so who knows. Its all entirely speculation at this point…

My thoughts on this new game are very unenthusiastic. While it has some unique ideas, though really what MMO doesn’t, it just doesn’t interest me. What I grew to love about STALKER was the atmosphere and the world around me. I just don’t see that happening in an MMO where I’m lagging and getting the usual noise from the other players all around me. And really, it feels like they are trying to cash in with the F2P model. Idk, its a very curious and questionable move by this development team. Not to mention, F2P just feels like I get ripped off more often than not, especially in MMO games. But what can I do about it. If the game comes out great, well, great. It would be nice but I’m very skeptical. Time will tell.

Its a pity to see a franchise stop like this. Although, admittedly, its a lot better than watching this franchise crash and burn. At least it got to go out on a high note with COP and SOC.  Which were very good games for what they were. One day I shall replay them. Who knows when, but one day. And I’ll enjoy them for what they are, games that scare the heck out of me. ;).

I hope you enjoyed this musing, leave a comment and until next time…
