Personal Musings: 2/20/12…

Rantings of gaming…

Hello everyone, its the beginning of the week.  Monday for me is almost a third day weekend, but I usually do something productive.  Homework or something.  Which I did today, in addition to attending my class of course.  Other than that, there is not much to talk about personally.  Yeah, I lead an exciting life, I know.  Although I’m becomming worried about a cough that seems to be cropping up…just a dry one so it might not be that bad.  Hopefully.  x_x.  Still, if I have to get sick (and I don’t want to be, but you know) I will talk a cough over anything else.  Such as the flu, or puking.  Puking is just no good no matter what.  Flu just makes your week really annoying because you can’t do jack-all.  Anyway, I’m rambling.  I’m sure my cough is nothing and I’ll do everything I can to make sure it is nothing.  Anywho…

So, when I was about to get on the bus for class today, I saw this and yeah, I’ve already tweeted and plused about this but I’m bringing it up again.  To rant about it.  Yeah, I’m ranting today.  Just forgetting the fact that Nintendo has said they will never bring any of their games to any other platforms (fat chance, but w/e), just forgetting the fact that the developer is called “House of Anime” instead of “Nintendo of America Inc” (or something like that), it just blows my mind that people made this game soar to the top of the iOS app store charts.

I…just want to bang my head into a wall at this point.  And I personally do not blame any other developer on the iOS platform who is banging his/her head into a wall when they heard about this.  I mean, their legitimate apps can’t sell worth a darn but this app sold like hotcakes.  This obvious and total fake of an app sold like hotcakes.  You know what?  I don’t think Apple should refund anyone who bought that game.  Anyone who was stupid enough to buy it deserved to lose their money.  (And actually, good luck with Apple’s refund help…”desk”.  Its a pain from what I hear).  Everytime I see things like this, it no longer surprises me that people continue to scam to this day.  I mean, CMON PEOPLE, IT HAD A 1.5 STAR RATING, DIDN’T THAT TIP YOU OFF?!  It clearly didn’t.  And it took Apple two days to finally take it down.  I wonder what tipped them off.  -_-

But no, my rant doesn’t stop with stupid people.  No, I aim my proverbial guns at Apple.  Did no one on your review team think “Hey, maybe we should call Nintendo and see if this is their game”.  What’s worse, this same developer also published a Digimon+ app and a Yu-gi-oh game.  Oh they were all broken.  No, I didn’t test them personally, I’m not about to waste my money, but the reviews told me enough.  But there they were.  On the App store.  They all passed inspection by Apple which if any of the people on the review team had opened the app on their iDevice, would have realized those apps were a scam.  Not to mention thoroughly broken and unusable.  I now wonder how the heck they are actually “reviewing” the apps.  Do they just run a virus-scanner over the file and say that’s good?  I mean, ffs.  Your the gatekeeper to the App Store.  START ACTING LIKE COMPETENT GATEKEEPERS.  Don’t even make me bring up the address-book scandal that came to the attention of Congress last week, Apple.  That is just as embarrassing and quite frankly, I hope you get sued into the ground for that one too.  But that’s another rant for another day.  (tl;dr: apps were uploading our entire address book to servers without informing us.  That is being corrected as I speak but…yeah.)

At this point Apple, either fix your broken review system, give us a much better refund system on the iOS app store, allow us to try out apps via “demos” or “lite versions” or throw in the towel and let us be as regulated as the Android market.  The amount of bad apps leaking through has been increasing as of late and with sales like Pokemon Yellow there, you’ve only encouraged it to get worse.  So just shape up already.  Your making a ton of money off the app store, you clearly can hire more people to test these apps.  Heck, I’ll do it…  But alas…

At the end of the day, Apple is only human.  Err, a corporation run by human beings.  We all make mistakes.  Here as of late, it seems Apple is tripping on quite a few mistakes.  Hopefully, it will turn around.  Granted, there aren’t that many apps slipping through the cracks.  I won’t put a number on it, but its a small number from what I’ve seen.  But a good dose of waking up is always needed.  Anyway, rant on this subject is over.  And don’t get me started on Clear…most overrated app on the app store atm…(points at above picture).

I also had read this article about Alan Wake.  Where the tl;dr is, the developers behind the successful Alan Wake game finally gave PC gamers a quality port.  Within 48 hours of launch, they made their money back on the port.  Everything after this point will be pure profit for them.  Heck, maybe I’ll take a look at the game.  Who knows.  But if you listen to publishers these days, we’re a bunch of scumbag pirates and just steal any IP that comes our way that isn’t locked down with DRM.  Can we just stop this attitude?  I think we’ve proven time and time and TIME AND TIME AGAIN, that we are not all a bunch of pirates stealing your games.  I’m almost certain that Alan Wake’s development team had the same attitude, or maybe that’s another game that I can’t think of.  Argh, its so many I’ve lost track at this point.  Minecraft, WoW, Alan Wake, Terraria, and a lot of other games on PC have been successful and profitable on the PC platform.  You want to know why your games are probably not selling?  It might be that its because the game sucks, they weren’t ported very well, have terrible bug problems or other reasons.  It just astounds me to hear developers go on and on about how we’re all a bunch of pirates.  Quit blaming your poor sales on the pirate crowd.  You have poor sales because people didn’t buy your crappy game.  Its that simple (ok, maybe not, but you get my point).  *sigh*.  But what can you do…

Now here’s a beauty of a game.  Been enjoying Sanctum today (along with a healthy dose of STALKER: COP) and its just fantastically gorgeous.  Its also challenging as heck just on “normal mode”.  Once I get good enough maybe I’ll try and get some multiplayer running.  Yeah, I know, Multiplayer in a FPS Tower Defense game?  I’ll bet its a lot of fun and it better be.  I wanted the same thing in Orcs Must Die so I’m really excited to get my hands on it in this game.  Hopefully its as solid an experience as the single player has been.  We shall see.  But its just a really enjoyable Tower Defense game with some FPS action tied into the game and I’ve been meaning to play it for a long time now.  Got the chance to put some serious hours into it today.  :).  They’ve announced that they are going to do a Sanctum 2 sequel so I’ll be watching to see what they do with that when it comes out next year.  <3 Indie games.  🙂

Also been doing some serious podcast catching up as well.  Went from 20 podcasts to a mere 12.  Granted, I found a few were double podcasts (dunno how that happened) but still, progress.  And it shows I’ll need to find some more because I’ll probably be able to munch through the rest by Wednesday so any suggestions for new podcasts would be highly appreciated :).

And with that, that’s the musings/rants for today.  Yeah, I got ranty today, it’ll happen ;).  Hope you enjoyed and until next time…keep your swords sharp!
